There was a too brief period of time when my small son’s most favorite activity was to take blankets, couch cushions and chairs, and fashion what he affectionately termed a “rat cave”. Into this haven we would scurry, where we could hide from the world (and mom, ten feet away in the kitchen making dinner) and enjoy the solitude and safety a well built rat cave can provide.

Our first son, Daniel, was prone to eye infections in his pre-school years. The first time he had pink eye, his pediatrician prescribed an antibiotic eye ointment and instructed us on how to use it. However, she did not explain how difficult it would be to get our son to cooperate.

For Mothers Day my daughter sent me an MP3 with a recording of her playing the piano interpreting three short pieces from Bach, Burgmuller and Handel. When I opened the files we were both talking over the skype and could see each other in video, she was in her apartment in Barcelona and I was in my home in Alabama.
